Storm Season Roof Guide: Before, During, and After a Storm

The UK storm season runs roughly from October through to March, with the East of England — including Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, and Norfolk — regularly experiencing some of the strongest winds in the country. Knowing how to prepare, what to do during a storm, and how to assess damage safely afterwards can make a significant difference to both your safety and your repair bill.

Before the Storm: Preparation

When a storm warning is issued, there are several things you can do to reduce the risk of roof damage.

Check the Forecast and Act Early

The Met Office issues storm warnings up to five days in advance. If a significant storm is forecast, use the time to:

  • Clear gutters and downpipes of any debris that could cause blockages
  • Secure or bring in any garden furniture, pots, or items that could become airborne and strike the roof
  • Check that any known loose tiles or ridge caps have been reported to a roofer (ideally before storm season begins)

Know Your Roof's Vulnerabilities

If you have had previous roof problems — a loose ridge cap, a flat roof section that pools water, a chimney that needs repointing — these are the areas most likely to be affected by a storm. Being aware of them means you know exactly what to check afterwards.

Have a Roofer's Number to Hand

In the aftermath of a major storm, roofers are in high demand. Having our number saved — 07878 827 758 — means you can call immediately rather than searching for a reliable local roofer while water is coming in.

During the Storm: Stay Safe

The most important rule during a storm is simple: stay inside and away from windows. Do not attempt to inspect or repair your roof during a storm under any circumstances.

If you hear unusual sounds — tiles sliding, something striking the roof, or water beginning to drip — note the location but do not investigate until the storm has fully passed.

If water begins to come in:

  • Place buckets or towels under drips
  • Move valuables and electronics away from the affected area
  • If water is near electrical fittings, turn off the power at the fuse box and call an electrician

After the Storm: Assessing the Damage

Once the storm has passed and conditions are safe, carry out a careful ground-level inspection.

What to Check From the Ground

Walk slowly around the perimeter of your property and look for:

  • Tiles on the ground — Missing tiles are the most obvious sign of storm damage
  • Ridge caps — These are particularly vulnerable to high winds; look for any that have shifted or fallen
  • Chimney damage — Check for fallen chimney pots, large pieces of mortar, or a visibly leaning stack
  • Guttering — Look for sections that have pulled away from the fascia or are visibly damaged
  • Aerial or satellite dishes — These can be blown off and damage tiles as they fall

What to Check in the Loft

After the storm, check your loft space for:

  • New damp patches or water staining on timbers
  • Daylight visible through the roof
  • Any debris that may have penetrated the roof covering

Do Not Climb on the Roof

Even after the storm has passed, a wet roof is extremely dangerous. Do not attempt to climb onto your roof to inspect or carry out temporary repairs. Call a professional roofer — we have the equipment and training to work safely at height.

Dealing With Insurance

If your roof has been damaged by a storm, your buildings insurance should cover the repair costs (subject to your excess and policy terms). Before calling your insurer:

  • Take clear photographs of all visible damage, both inside and outside
  • Note the date and time of the storm
  • Keep any tiles or debris that have fallen — they may be useful as evidence

Call your insurer as soon as possible after the storm. Most policies require you to report damage promptly and to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage (such as having a tarpaulin fitted if tiles are missing).
